READING THE BIBLE by Rev. Dr. Ron Ryan
Someone has asked me if we should continue to read the Bible.
My response: Oh, my, yes! How can we talk about it if we don't read it?
But, read it with your eyes open! You are all intelligent enough to recognize a metaphor. Keep in mind that the Bible is a metaphor, or a book of metaphors. Do NOT read it literally. read it metaphorically and mythically.
Don't try to memorize it! read it for the enjoyment.
And, it is not all going to make sense.
When you come across stuff, like those monsters, you might ask yourself "I wonder what events gave rise to this story? Is this the "memory shadow" of a real event, or was someone smoking whatever served as marijuana in those days?
(I believe that much of the OT consists of "memory shadows" stories about stuff that has been forgotten but only the shadow of memories survives. Who, in Genesis, for example, were the "gods" that came down and married the daughters of men? Gods? Came down from where? The skys? The mountains? Space ships? What is meant by "gods" anyhow? What kind of machine did Enoch
see? Who/what was the "god" in that space ship/helicopter?
My recommendation as the "most readable" Bible is THE LIIVING BIBLE, first published around 1971 and is a paraphrase translation by Kenneth Taylor based upon on the American Standard version (ASV) as his base text.
The nice thing about this version is that it is in everyday language.
